Grand Canyon - Horseshoe Mesa

Some of you know that I spent two weeks at Grand Canyon late last month. Way too much of that time was away from the rim, but part was spent below the rim. Below are some pics from a hike to Horseshoe Mesa, about halfway between Grandview Point (about 10 min east of the visitor center) and the river.

The scenery on the mesa and at our campground was more like Craters of the Moon than typical Colorado Plateau

Thunderstorms rolled in about 3p and lasted through 8p. The sight of lightning popping off all over and thunder rolling up and down the canyon was pretty damn cool.

Looking upriver from just below Grandview Point

I've got sandstone, pinyon pines, and temperatures above 75F - of course i'm going to smile

Few things more gorgeous than sunrise in the desert...

...but sunrise combined with a full moon just might...

The greend and blue specks are copper ore - there used to be a copper mine near where we camped

Only about 3.5 miles each way. I wasn't about to try to make it to Phantom Ranch (river) and back in two days...in late August...when the backcountry permit office handwrote 'ROASTING PIT HOT' on the weather forcast for Phantom...
